The data we hold on computer networks is vital to the operation
of our business. Indeed, most businesses today would be unable
to survive a total data loss. To protect our digital assets
we institute procedures to regularly back up our data and
perhaps store copies in a secure off-site facility. However,
once we have connected our network to the Internet we have
to deal with another threat; the unwanted intruder or hacker.
Without adequate protection we risk both data theft and corruption.
It is the role of a Firewall to provide that protection.
If you think "It won't happen to me" then think
again. Within the first hour of connecting your network
to the Internet automated port scanners will have probed your
network for vulnerabilities several times. If someone does
penetrate your network they may be content to simply leave
an electronic calling card or they may have something more
sinister in mind. If they work for a competitor, theft of
data maybe the motive. If they bear a grudge or are inclined
to electronic vandalism they may damage or delete your valuable
data.
If you network is currently protected by a NAT Router and/or
Proxy Server then you already recognise the need for boundary
security. However, technology marches on and so do the skills
of the hackers. These tools no longer provide the protection
they once did and should be complemented or replaced with
the latest Stateful Inspection Firewall technology.
The Data Protection Act stipulates that if you are carrying
employee or other personal information on your network you
have a duty to protect it from falling into the wrong hands.
A professionally installed Firewall will protect your data
and evidence to the Registrar that you have taken reasonable
precautions at the network boundary.
