Frequently Asked Questions

Although the Shiva product range is no longer manufactured, XCOMM remains committed to providing support and replacement parts for those organisations who still depend on Shiva for their remote access.

Why did Shiva come out with a new high end chassis?

  • Shiva came out with a new improved chassis to offer redundant power supplies and support high density digital modem cards (24 & 32 modems per card). In addition, the new chassis has enough power and cooling and cooling to act as a platform for all new technologies that might emerge.
  • There is nothing wrong with our current chassis. If we are to offer these new features increased power is required and the current chassis does not have the cooling capability for a more powerful power supply.

What is different about the new chassis?

The major difference in the new chassis are as follows:

  • Two power supplies, with two power cords, for redundancy
  • Cooling with two fans, air flow will be from front to back
  • Autosensing 10/100 Ethernet Card is standard
  • All connections, T1, E1, PRI, power cord, Ethernet, are in the front, making it easier for Network Managers
  • ISA Bus is no longer part of the back plane (cannot use Xircom WAN cards)
  • LCD has been removed, all the information will be available with a terminal connected in the rear of the LanRover Access Switch
  • 5 status LEDs on front panel to quickly communicate the status of the following areas: system, fans and power supply issues.
  • New front bezel - new sleeker look
  • On/Off switch has been removed

I liked the LCD, how can I get the same functionality - - - How will I be able to do a clear and download or assign an IP addresses?

  • The 5 LEDs will offer a quick glance status overview, where all green means everything is running great. The LEDs will indicate the status of the primary power supply (1), secondary power supply (1), fans (1) and system status (2). System status LEDs cover initialization, image running, downloading, download failure, LAN activity and WAN activity.
  • Assignment of IP address will be done through an "IP auto discovery" feature in SNM, which will allow the assigning of an IP address to a LRAS.
  • Clear and Download will be done via a push button on the CPU card. When depressed quickly, the code in the unit will restart ("warm boot"), a long depression will enter the unit in download mode.
  • Status Messages - these messages will be visible via the serial port and a terminal.

How do the redundant power supplies work?

  • Redundant Power will be achieved through the use of dual power supplies in the new LanRover Access Switch chassis. Both power supplies will work at the same time through load sharing. If a power supply fails, then there will be automatic switch-over to the working power supply. That power supply will handle the full load. The power supplies are not hot swappable.

Will my older DMC cards work in the new chassis?

  • All 12up Digital Modem Cards work in the new dual power supply chassis.
  • All Single or Dual E1/T1/PRI cards work in the new dual power supply chassis.
  • The older 10MB Ethernet card works in the new dual power supply chassis.
  • The Xircom WAN card does not work in the new dual power supply chassis. The CPU cards requires 12MB of memory and a new flash to work in the new chassis.

Can I upgrade my old LanRover Access Switch to a new chassis, how do I go about doing the upgrade?

  • A chassis upgrade is available. It includes the following:
    • an empty chassis (no CPU card)
    • a 10/100 card
    • 8MB of memory
    • ShivOS 5.4 flash.
  • Memory is included in the upgrade kit because the LRAS with two power supplies require 12MB of memory. Older chassis only have 8MB. Some customers will need to swap out their 4MB of memory on their CPU card and replace it with the 8MB of memory, to give a total of 12MB of memory.
  • One will need to transfer the Digital Modem Cards and the WAN cards (T1/E1/PRI Card).
  • One will also have to transfer over the CPU card, but first SRAM memory and the flash will need to be replaced (they are included in the upgrade kit).

Can I purchase the LRAS with one power supply?

  • The dual power supply LanRover Access Switch comes standard with two power supplies for redundancy. The current single power supply LRAS, which will continue to ship, will support single supply needs.

What if my I need to replace a power supply?

  • Because of safety issues involved, and obtaining approvals, replacing a power supplies needs to be done via a "return to Shiva."
  • Shiva power supplies rarely need replacing, Shiva's lab tests reveal that the MTBF for the power supplies are greater than 30 years! In the event that a power supply does fail, the new chassis could run indefinitely with one power supply

When will the higher density DMC cards be available?

  • They will be available with ShivOS 6.0 in September.

How much will they cost?

  • TBD

What will be the capacity of the chassis?

  • At launch the dual power supply chassis will have the same capacity as the single power supply access switch.
    • Analog - 72
    • ISDN - 120
    • Mixed - 8 slots, with a maximum of 4 Shiva Wan Cards
    • 120 ISDN calls, with 4 Shiva WAN calls allows for a maximum of 48 calls
    • 72 Analog calls, with 6 12-up DMC cards, allows for a maximum of 60 ISDN calls
  • Upon release of the high density Digital Modem Cards LRAS II will be able to support the following densities:
    • 120 analog only calls
    • 120 ISDN only calls
    • 120 Mixed calls
  • Target longer term goals will be as follows: See Futures section in Executive Summary
    • 240 ISDN calls (8 Shiva WAN cards)
    • 144 (T1)/160(E1) Analog calls (3 Shiva WAN cards, 5 32-Up DMC cards)
  • These number will be achieved through additional Shiva WAN Cards (S97) and high density DMC cards. The number of HDLC controllers on the Shiva WAN Card (S97) will not change.

Will there be an impact with support and service in the single power supply chassis?

  • Shiva will continue to provide support and service to the single power supply chassis. This product remains a key member of the LanRover product set.
