SSL VPN uses
the Browser installed with the operating system so that you can create
an Internet VPN without the hassle of deploying and maintaining
separate IPsec VPN clients. Without the hassle of trying to debug problems on PCs not owned by the organisation, it opens up business opportunities to encourage remote working or allowing partner organisations to individual files or intranet pages.
SSL VPN supports all Web, email, client
server and host based computing applications without any changes.
It is arguably more secure that IPsec as it doesn't tunnel
the data directly onto the corporate network. Instead, the
tunnels are terminated at the VPN appliance and the information
is proxied onto the network.
Like IPsec an SSL VPN works by tunnelling the data in an
encrypted envelope. This protects your data from prying eyes
and makes it just about impossible to tamper with. The IPsec
standard is ideal for site-to-site links and small remote
access deployments while an SSL VPN is perfect for larger remote access requirements. See VPN
Technology for a backgrounder on VPN and the relative
strengths of each system.
